Susanna Tanger: 50 years around Mulberry Street

Contributed by Natasha Sweeten / A few winters ago, in a small town upstate, I met my neighbor, the artist Susanna Tanger. She’d invited me for tea, and as we got to know each other I felt grateful to have a kindred spirit nearby. Her paintings seemed to grow from concentrated, layered planes of light, the soft colors humming and communing with river vistas framed by her studio windows. Our neighborship was brief. Susanna returned full-time to her Soho loft, where she’s lived and worked since 1975. But her short biography seemed compelling: she’d arrived in NYC in her early twenties to a burgeoning art community, maintained a studio practice, and raised two children as a single parent. I had the urge to learn more about her.

NYC Selected Gallery Guide: September, 2023

Contributed by Sharon Butler / Here are a few shows that stand out this month: Joan Snitzer at AIR in Brooklyn, Rebecca Morris at Bortolami, Leslie Smith III at Chart, Wade Guyton at Mathew Marks, Charline von Heyl at Petzel, and Sam Gilliam, Julian Schnabel, and Jules de Balincourt solos at Pace. We also got an announcement for a show of new Cady Noland sculptures at Gagosian in the 871 Park Avenue space. Is this a prank, we wondered (as we posted the news immediately on social media). A bunch of art fairs are in town this month, including the indefatigable Spring/Break Art Show. Art fair addresses, links, and dates are all posted at the end of the gallery listings. Summer’s over everyone — welcome back.

NYC Selected Gallery Guide: August, 2022

Contributed by Sharon Butler / August is the laziest month in New York. Everyone takes a breath, some leave town, and others gear up for their September shows. That said, there is still plenty to see, usually in air-conditioned comfort. And, because gallerists are understandably loath to open new shows at the end of August, many existing ones get extended beyond announced closing dates.
