For two decades, I’ve managed to sustain Two Coats of Paint on a lean budget, thanks to support from readers like you. Your donations cover server costs and newsletter platform fees (which increase as more readers subscribe), writer honoraria, payments for production assistance, and a fraction of operating expenses. I work to offset these costs through advertising revenue, speaking engagements, our residency program, art sales, and teaching income.
A year ago, following the election, we anticipated difficult times ahead. I recognize that this has been a challenging year for nearly everyone, particularly within the art community. The art market has contracted, university art departments are facing cuts as enrollment declines, liberal arts education is under threat, government employees have experienced widespread job losses, and major news organizations have undergone dramatic consolidation. Yet precisely because of these challenges, it’s crucial to preserve independent platforms for arts writing — spaces where artists’ voices can flourish. As poet and cultural critic Matthew Arnold famously observed: “Art is still truth. Take refuge there.”
