This month, many galleries are taking a well-deserved break after a shitshow of a year. A few, though, are curating through the heat and hanging new shows. At Karma, Jane Dickson holds forth with a series of amusement park nocturnes. 5-50 presents “Becoming Otherwise” – paintings by Jocelyn Fine, Will Hutnick, Geist Topping, and Peter Schenck that crackle with energy in LIC. Deanna Evans Projects’ “ExtraOrdinary” features unsettled scenes of American home life by Lisha Bai, JJ Manford, and Ann Toebbe. At Margot Samel, Glasgow gallery Kendall Koppe organizes a roadshow exhibition of work by Laura Aldridge, while Essex Flowers mounts “Overhang 2,” a ro art services pop-up riffing on the idea of summer group-show abundance and community. At The Hole, on Bowery, don’t miss “Herbivore,” which includes work by Bushwick stalwart Ben Godward.
Speaking of Bushwick, Underdonk, which started there, is migrating again, this time to the third floor of 297 Grand Street on the LES. Cristin Tierney Gallery and Andrew Edlin are stepping off the Bowery for spaces in Tribeca. Meanwhile, Abaton Project Room has called it quits after a year of thoughtful exhibitions; alas, they only had a one-year lease. The rumor mill has been churning about what Venus Over Manhattan’s demise means. We’re thinking the closure of more established galleries might expand opportunities for scrappy, inventive newcomers like Abri Mars – the LES gallery that had the energy and vision to stage “Loading,” a well-received four-gallery mini-fair at The Caboose in Hudson held during Upstate Art Weekend.
