In June, in the wake of an exhausting month of fairs, NYC galleries are again presenting a full slate of exhibitions. At Field of Play, look for a survey of paintings by Lee Sherry (1947–2012). She had close ties with the Language Poets and was part of an avant-garde painting circle in Soho but never gained wide recognition. If old reconfigured texts and quirky materials that subvert narratives speak to you, Nancy Bowen’s first solo at Nunu Fine Art on Broome Street is a must-see. At Nicelle Beauchene, check out new figurative paintings by Jordan Kasey, who combines a 1970s super-graphic aesthetic with surreal, oversized figuration, and, at Bortolami, a solo show from Hanoi-based Tran Luon, who is a renowned curator and social activist as well as artist. With his impeccable knack for installation, Gedi Sibony presents another winsome arrangement of paintings and sculpture at Greene Naftali. On the Lower East Side, Hoffman Donahue features Vermont artist Altoon Sultan’s small-scale calfskin paintings of farm machines. And there’s “Twenty by Sixteen” – a massive 60-artist group show of uniformly small-scale works (20 x 16 inches) in Morgan Lehman’s newly expanded Chelsea space, which, given the number of artists involved, should enjoy one of the summer’s best attended openings.
