NYC Selected Gallery Guide, May 2026

Helen Frankenthaler, Water Shadows, 1988. Acrylic on canvas, 54 ½ × 113 inches (138.4 × 287 cm) © 2026 Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, Inc./Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. Photo: Maris Hutchinson

Yes, we have art fairs in town this month, and I’m looking forward to swinging by ESTHER III, a kind of alternative embodiment of the concept at Estonian House on 243 E. 34th Street from May 13–16. Thomas Erben is bringing work by Mike Cloud and a few of my other favorite NYC galleries will be there, King’s Leap among them. Reserve free tickets now. Also on the must-see list this month is “The Moment and the Distance,” a big Helen Frankenthaler solo at Gagosian, opening as I write this, which, with the Frankenthaler Foundation, is presenting 20 of Frankenthaler’s largest and, per Gagosian, most ambitious works. I’d think twice about calling her work “lyrical” – the recent exhibition in MoMA’s atrium proved it’s more idiosyncratic and formidable than that adjective suggests. White Cube is presenting a two-person exhibition with David Hammons and Jannis Kounellis (1936–2017). The show features work from the 1950s onward, and it should be eye-opening given the two artists’ shared fascination with found and ready-made materials. In addition, a shout-out goes to “In Search of Lost Light,” Jule Korneffel’s show at Spencer Brownstone which was just extended to May 16. Gedi Sibony opens on the 8th floor at Greene Naftali, Marina Adams presents work on paper at Peter Blum, and David Humphrey has drawings at Kate Werble in Soho. Allison Gildersleeve has her first solo at Upsilon (formerly Opera Gallery) at E67th Street. GAA is leaving Cortland Alley for Catskill, and Asya Geisberg is finally back in their 45 White Street location. Karla Knight opens at Andrew Edlin, which has moved to the second floor of 392 Broadway in Tribeca.

Appreciation and invitation: Big thanks to everyone who has stopped by to see “Abstract by Definition: Art Index,” the huge American Abstract Artists 90th anniversary show at Art Cake. I am a member of the group and will be part of the May 9, 4–5:30, panel discussion with exhibition curator Saul Ostrow and fellow abstract painter Tom McGlynn. Please join us for a conversation about the different ways we define, organize, and utilize abstract form in our work.
