Two Coats Selected Gallery Guide: December 2020

A.I.R. Gallery: Couroupita/Corpus Installation View, Rachelle Dang

December 2020 has finally arrived — the last month of a year that seemed as though it would never end. At Two Coats of Paint, that means I am in the middle of the year-end fundraising campaign. Membership, subscription — call it what you will — it’s your tax-deductible contributions that enable Two Coats to compile the gallery guide, pay the monthly server and email services fees, and give outside contributors a modest honorarium. The expenses add up, but we are dedicated to our readers and appreciate your commitment to helping Two Coats continue. Thank you for the generous donations we have already received. To submit contributions, please click here.

We are pleased that galleries are still open despite the slight uptick in Covid positivity rates, and many request that visitors make appointments. Nevertheless, we’ve found that spur-of-the-moment pop-ins are perfectly acceptable. Since the Miami art fairs are essentially taking place in online viewing rooms this year, December exhibitions are continuing without the usual interruptions and fatigue. Note that there is plenty of hand sanitizer and the gallaristers at the desks may want to take your information for subsequent contact-tracing. But honestly, masking and social distancing definitely aren’t a problem.

Among the exhibitions I’m recommending this month are Rico Gatson’s outstanding solo at both of Miles McEnery’s Chelsea spaces, Ken Weathersby’s “Dream Paintings” at Minus Space in DUMBO, Cate Giordano’s inventive, make-something-from-nothing Henry VIII installation at Postmasters in Tribeca, and “Yes We Change,” and Frosch & Portmann’s last show in their Stanton Street LES space. In Bushwick, Stephanie Theodore has extended her excellent group show “Deep States” into January (full disclosure: I have a few pieces on view), so take a trip on the L Train (it’s not crowded) and support the Bushwick art community. Roberta’s has a huge outdoor eating area and all bars seem to have makeshift parking-spot cafes, which, in and of themselves, could be called works of art.

May I be the first to say to each and every Two Coats reader: Happy New Year. The world is looking better for 2021. —Sharon Butler
