Alice Neel, Roses, 1983, oil on canvas, 48 1/2 x 36 inches //
“Alice Neel Late Portraits & Still Lifes,” David Zwirner, New York, NY. Through June 23, 2012. Who doesn’t love Alice Neel? The show is outstanding. When I stopped in the other day, a woman was sitting on the cement floor in the middle of the room, drawing. Most of the paintings depict people sitting in chairs, and yet, no chairs or benches anywhere in the vast space. I wonder what Neel would think if she saw her work hanging in such a huge, inhospitable vault.
